One minute from Maruyama Koen Station, Veggy Way is Sapporo’s most complete plant-based cafe: oriental vegan (no animal products and no garlic or onion), with a vegan take on the city’s signature miso ramen, soy-meat burgers, and a serious vegan parfait. The five-pungent-root-free kitchen makes it one of the few places in Hokkaido that Buddhist vegetarians can trust as-is.

Oriental Vegan, Explicitly
The distinction between “vegan” and “oriental vegan” is one very few restaurants in Japan explicitly hold themselves to. Vegan excludes animal products. Oriental vegan additionally excludes the five pungent roots — garlic, onion, leek, chive, and rakkyo — following a Buddhist proscription that has been part of certain schools’ vegetarian practice for well over a thousand years. Very few kitchens in Japan attempt this line, because omitting alliums fundamentally changes the flavor architecture of savory cooking. Veggy Way holds the line, and it holds it well enough to build a Sapporo miso ramen — the local specialty — that doesn’t feel like something is missing. That’s the reason we describe this shop as one of the few places in Hokkaido that Buddhist vegetarians and Jain travelers can trust as-is, without needing a special conversation with the kitchen. If your dietary standard includes the oriental vegan constraint, this listing is one of the reasons Veggy Way keeps appearing on international five-pungent-root-free travel guides.
