Verification notes
- Official Muslim Friendly page (read directly): teriyaki chicken bowl ¥1,080 w/ halal meat, no pork/alcohol IN THAT MENU
- No certificate (self-declared)
- Shared kitchen, separately-kept utensils (official)
- Prayer room: OTARU BRANCH ONLY (corrects older reports)
- Signature seafood bowls NOT covered
Nijo Market is on every Sapporo itinerary, and Donburi Chaya is its famous rice-bowl stop. Read this listing carefully, because the details matter: the shop’s Muslim-friendly offer is a specific chicken menu — the signature seafood bowls are NOT part of it. To its credit, the restaurant discloses everything itself on an official Muslim Friendly page: halal chicken, no certification, shared kitchen with separately-kept utensils, and a prayer room only at the Otaru branch. That transparency is why it’s listed here — with its limits spelled out.
What We Verified
- Official Muslim Friendly page, read directly — the teriyaki chicken bowl (¥1,080) uses halal meat, with no pork or alcohol used in the Muslim-friendly menu. (A grilled chicken steak version is New Chitose Airport branch only.) Checked July 5, 2026.
- Honest limits, stated by the shop — “We do not obtain HALAL certificate”; the kitchen is not halal-exclusive, though utensils are kept separately; prayer room at the Otaru branch only (older articles claiming one here are wrong — we checked).
- Open practically every day — 7:30–16:30 in summer, 8:00–17:00 in winter; closed only Jan 1. A rare reliable morning option.
- Location — inside Nijo Market; sister branches at Otaru and New Chitose Airport.
What We Could Not Confirm
- Whether halal soy sauce is available (mentioned by an old review; not on the official page).
- Mirin or other seasoning alcohol in the teriyaki sauce — the shop’s no-alcohol statement covers the Muslim-friendly menu, but ask if strict.
- Reservation policy (likely walk-in).
- Current seafood bowl prices.
What to Order
For Muslim travelers: the teriyaki chicken bowl (¥1,080) — the one dish covered by the shop’s halal-meat program. Traveling companions without restrictions can dive into the famous uni-ikura-crab bowls at the same table.

The Honest Disclosure Model
Donburi Chaya’s Muslim-friendly page is one of the more usefully candid documents any restaurant on this site has published about itself. The shop tells you, directly and in English, four important things: it does not hold a halal certificate; its kitchen is not halal-exclusive (utensils are kept separate, but the cooking space is shared); its prayer room is at the Otaru branch only; and its Muslim-friendly offering is one specific dish — a teriyaki chicken bowl — not the full menu. This is not what a shop would say if it wanted to inflate its profile in inbound-tourism guides. It’s what a shop says when it wants informed customers rather than confused ones. That we then found older articles claiming the Nijo Market branch has a prayer room (a real error we corrected in our listing) is the exact reason the shop’s own disclosure matters more than aggregated third-party summaries. When the operator tells you what the shop does and doesn’t do, believe them.
