Gyumon has been the name in halal yakiniku for Tokyo’s Muslim community for nearly two decades — it calls itself Japan’s first halal wagyu BBQ restaurant, serving top-grade A5 beef (BMS12) a short walk from Shibuya Station, open every day until 23:00. Long track record, sister shops nearby — and one verification gap we have to be straight about, below.

What We Verified

  • “Fully halal certified” stated officially — the group site says all ingredients, seasonings, and cooking methods adhere to Islamic guidelines under guidance from certification authorities. Checked July 5, 2026.
  • Why the label is Muslim-Friendly — no certifier name, number, or certificate image appears anywhere on the official site; a third-party guide names “Malaysia Halal Corporation” but the official site never does, and we found no public certified list containing Gyumon (we also checked the Japan Halal Foundation’s results page directly: not listed). Even the founding year differs between the group’s own pages (2007 vs 2009). None of this disproves certification — it just isn’t verifiable, so we label by our rules.
  • Practicalities — 12:00–23:00, open daily, 45 seats; A5 wagyu (BMS12) stated officially.

What We Could Not Confirm

  • Certifier name, number, validity (see above).
  • Explicit “no pork / no alcohol” wording on the official site.
  • Reservation policy (one listing says no reservations — go early at dinner).
  • Prayer space.

What to Order

Go classic: skirt steak and sirloin over charcoal. Budget roughly ¥3,000–4,000 per person. The group also runs a halal ramen shop and a second yakiniku branch nearby if the wait is long.

A Note on the Founding Year

Something small but revealing about this shop: its group website says the first Gyumon opened in 2007, and its Shibuya branch page says the certification was received in 2009. Whether this means the shop began operating in 2007 and got certified two years later, or whether one of those years is a typo, we couldn’t determine — and when we asked the same question about its certification body, we couldn’t find independent confirmation for that either. None of this means the shop is doing anything wrong. It’s a nearly-two-decade-old business run by people who serve the Muslim community and have a track record. But the pattern — official-sounding claims that don’t quite line up when you dig — is exactly why our verification methodology exists, and it’s the reason a shop that likely has been operating in good faith for years ends up on our site with a yellow label rather than a green one. We report facts, and this is what the facts show.
